The streets of London might not be the first place you think about when you consider winter walking, but in fact you probably already do quite a lot of it if you live there.
With tube delays happening so often and the crowded congested roads, using public transport can often take far longer than just walking to your destination.
Commuters often get off early rather than change tube lines and walk the last mile or so to work. As well as being a chance to exercise, it can provide some clear thinking time without having your head stuck under someone else’s paper or worse, their armpit.
For tourists visiting the capital city, they may be fooled into thinking distances between attractions are too big to walk – especially if they view the city through the schematics of the London Underground map. In fact, many of the main tourist hot spots are a stone’s throw from each other, and the walks in between can be great – especially if you find a Thames footpath to follow.
Don’t be put off by the weather – all you need is some decent waterproof gear. You can wear outdoor brands without looking out of place – a North Face jacket will blend in with all the other colours and styles you see on the streets of London, and you’ll probably find more people wearing clothing designed for the great outdoors in inner cities than you do on country hikes.
And when the weather really gets cold, you might even consider getting ice grips for shoes, so that you don’t have to slip and slide your way to work in the early mornings before the road gritters have done their job.
